Below you will find a list of scholarships that are specifically tailored for undergraduate (and sometimes graduate) students who want to pursue an education based on sustainability.
Annie’s Homegrown Sustainable Agriculture Scholarship
“We strive to make a positive impact through the foods we make, and we know we can’t change the food system alone. Through our scholarship program, we are thrilled to support students who share our mission to leave the planet better than we found it by advancing the principles of regenerative agriculture.” —Annie’s
Annie’s Homegrown, a company based out of Berkeley, California, offers an annual Sustainable Agriculture Scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students seeking an education focused on responsible agriculture food stability. Interested students can apply in early 2019.
Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education Awards
The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) ranks Green Mountain College’s curriculum #1 in the nation for sustainability. Similarly, the AASHE grants awards to honor students from AASHE-member institutions who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in promoting campus sustainability at their community college, four-year university, and graduate institution levels. Application deadlines vary.
Paul and Marsha Fonteyn Full Tuition Make a Difference Scholarship
The recipient is awarded full tuition, room, board and fees at Green Mountain College. This award is renewed annually as long as the recipient remains in good academic standing. It is awarded to a student who demonstrates his/her significant contribution to a fellow human, to society or toward conservation and sustainability.
To be considered for this award you must share the nomination form with someone who can recommend you for the award (teacher, mentor, adviser, etc.). Once the nomination is submitted, you will receive an application form and an essay prompt to complete.
Green Mountain College First in Sustainability Scholarship
This scholarship is open to any high school senior who has been accepted to GMC, and the online application requires applicants to submit an essay, up to 800 words, describing:
- What change you would like to make for a better and more sustainable world;
- How an education at Green Mountain College will prepare you to make the change.
Brower Youth Awards
Founded by the Sierra Club’s first executive director, David Brower, this award recognizes six environmental activists between the ages of 13 and 22. Administered by the Earth Island Institute, which founded by Brower in 1982, the program offers each award recipient a $3,000 cash prize and a week-long trip to San Francisco, where they participate in conferences and outdoor activities. Blades of Grass Green Scholarship Fund
The Blades of Green Scholarship Fund is open to undergraduate and graduate students. In order to be considered for this award, you must be pursuing an education in environmental studies or related fields and submit a letter of intent describing what inspired your pursuit of a sustainability-focused field.
Submit your letter of intent before 3/15/19 in order to qualify. The winner will be awarded $1,000.
Windstar Environmental Studies Scholarship
Offering two $500 scholarships for qualified undergraduates entering their junior or senior year of college and one $1,000 scholarship for graduate students entering their second year of a master’s program, the Windstar Environmental Studies Scholarship program seeks to help sustainability-inspired students fund their education.
Eligible candidates must be enrolled in an accredited U.S. institution for environmental studies or environmental engineering, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and submit a 500-word essay on previous environment-related service work.
